Workshop Description:
This special workshop is for children age 8 through age 15.  Classes with be held in Plainview at the Jon Hassler Theater.  Demostrations and individualized instruction will be tailored to the age and skill - level of each child. To learn the printmaking process, the children will make mono-color syrofoam, linolium, multi-color styrofoam and rubber stamp prints. They will have the opportunity to do more in-depth work using their favorite process. Children have the choice of bringing a brown bag lunches or ordering a boxed lunch. Because they will be working with paint and ink, they should also dress comfortably in clothes that can take an occasional spill.

A secondary goal of the workshop is to give children the opportunity to interact with a professional artist.   Mr. Homstad's "Why I Make Art" statement summarizes his own experience,

"When I was in Junior High, like all kids I was given apptitude tests and grilled about what I would like to do for the rest of my life.  I always loved to draw and did it all the time.  I liked the idea of being my own boss, so I picked being an artist and studied art every change I got. After graduating from college I was driving across the country for my 10th art fair and I thought, "I am a traveling salesman!" The last job I would have picked was traveling salesman. But as Greg Brown says in a song, "It's not what you think it is, it's just what it is."If you don't have to draw or sculpt, or paint every chance you get; if you don't regret leaving an art museum before you have seen every object; if you don't think about art all the time; then maybe this is not the job for you.... Why do I make art? Because I have to!"
